Do know and respect your limitations. Don’t put an individual’s health at risk because of your own ignorance or lack of ability. When tumbling, cheerleaders have their own set of dos and don’ts. Tumbling is such an individual activity that each cheerleader must also follow a personal set of guidelines, implement the safety precautions for each attempted skill, and ultimately be responsible for his or her own well-being. A coach is responsible for training cheerleaders in tumbling, but the cheerleaders themselves must be accountable in regards to their own safety.

Ideally, when a tumbler begins a new skill progression, the spotter will be very close to the tumbler. As the tumbler becomes more confident with the skill, the spotter can begin to back off and allow the tumbler to throw more and more of the skill without assistance. A tumbler’s learning process can be tedious for the spotter because the movements of the tumbler are quite repetitious, but repetition is the key to skill development. As a tumbler’s skill proficiency increases, spotters can determine the parts of the skill that still require hands-on manipulation.

Although this is a great rule of thumb, a spotter also needs to be ready to travel in any direction to assist the tumbler. When learning new skills, tumblers can be inconsistent and unpredictable. In the hands-on method, a coach can physically manipulate the situation and ensure a cheerleader’s safe execution of a skill. The coach can manipulate the tumbler’s body by putting pressure and force on the skills and assisting in a safe landing. As mentioned, although the hands-on method is the most common in spotting for tumbling, it requires extensive training and expertise to execute effectively.
